Amber R. Clifford-Napoleone is assistant professor of anthropology, and specializes in the study of American subcultural music scenes.  She’s also a museum curator with expertise in ethnographic material culture and textile conservation.  A lifelong music fan who credits her coming out to a combination of Joan Jett and Esther Newton, Amber (called Dr. C by her students) is a self-proclaimed rivethead who prefers the heavy: industrial, doom, and sludge.  Her current research is on queer fans of heavy metal, and how they made and remake the metal scene(s).

  1. Hello Amber!

I can’t tell if are still running this blog, but I LOVE it. Thank you for doing this research. I am still delving into it, but I was thinking about how much I love metal, and how I couldn’t think of any queer performers besides Halford. Either ways I wanted to say thanks for your work.

PS I play drums in a metal band that has real low-budget recordings, but you can see it here: http://youtu.be/liFumL_sxMQ

    • Thanks for your reply! It is great having other queer folks follow the blog. I’m sorry it has been such a long delay before my reply to you, I’ve been swamped with writing my book. Would you be interested in doing an interview about being a queer metal musician?
